The answer, as you might have guessed, is no, not under usual circumstances. Even Anonymous, aren’t really anonymous. It is almost guaranteed that there are people in the FBI, in MI6 and in other security agencies around the world who know exactly who is part of this cyber group and how to get to them. This might be one of the reasons why Anonymous don’t really do anything anymore except release memes and post on social networks such as Twitter. They know that if they did any serious damage, they would be caught and hauled in. Before we get into the way around the lack of anonymity online let’s look at what it means.
If you’re not anonymous online, then everything you do can be monitored and accessed. This is why you should always be very careful about the sites you visit and the files that you download. For instance, you might think there’s no harm occasionally visiting an illegal online streaming site. But there is because they don’t have to catch you watching the movie. All they need to do is show that you visited the site. These days they can even demonstrate what you were doing on it.
Is this the only issues with anonymity online? No, because we also need to think about what you say and do online. You might feel anonymous when you post something on a comments section or on a social media post, but you’re not really. One day, someone could drag it back up and use it to embarrass you. This is exactly what happened to Trevor Noah when he received the job of hosting the Daily Show. People discovered old Twitter posts that were deemed sexist.
So, now that we’ve shown the consequences of a lack of anonymity online let’s think about how to protect yourself.
You can set up a VPN to protect yourself and make sure that what you do online can not be seen by other people. If you don’t know what a VPN is, I got familiar with this beginners guide. It might help you a lot and ensure you know exactly how they can be used. It’s important to understand that this is just one line of defense.
There are privacy settings on almost every social media website, and this will allow you to cover yourself to an extent. We all post things without thinking on social media, and even those who are famous have been in trouble for this at some point or another. However, if you’re not a social media star, there’s no reason for your profiles to be public. Keep them private and only people who you know will be able to see what you post.
Finally, you can also think about changing the privacy settings on your computer. While opening an Incognito tab doesn’t mean you are surfing anonymously, it does mean you can stop your computer saving the info. This can be useful if you are using a public computer where you don’t want the info stored.
