Around the world, there are many people playing video games right now. Each day, millions log on to enjoy their favorite form of recreation. But this hasn’t always been the case. Today less number of people know the history of video games. Let’s take a look at this infographic by List enthusiast. It shows how the video game industry has evolved into what it is today.
Games of this era were early experiments in computer programming and interfacing. They were made using rudimentary means and based on board games. The creation of the BASIC computer language in 1964 meant a lot more programmers could begin experimenting with game creation.
These early efforts gave birth to the first golden age of computer games, with the creation of arcade games and eventually home consoles.
From the start of the 1970s, technology advanced enough to allow for video games to become widespread. They became popular as arcade games, and the very first generation of home consoles for video games became available. There were some troubled times for these devices, with a lack of emphasis on game design leading to a big console market crash in 1983.
But the rise in personal computers (PCs) in the 1980s meant a great expansion in the number of people looking for video games on their computers. And the next generation of consoles at the end of the decade cemented Japanese companies like Nintendo and Sega. These emerged as the kings of the market and brought the console back into popularity – especially with the introduction of multiplayer gaming increasing the ways games can be social.
Further advances in computing power in the 1990s paved the way for the creation of 3-dimensional (3D) graphics using polygons to create entire worlds in realistic ways. This, along with the introduction of powerful 64-bit graphics on consoles such as Nintendo’s N64, Microsoft’s X-Box or Sony’s Playstation, allowed for a whole new era of games to be created. These games utilized the new technology to improve gameplay and create whole new genres of games.
Around the same time, some other important developments in the history of video games were going on as well. The very first games for mobile phones were developed and spread by Nokia, and the Internet was also growing in popularity around the world. This would lead to a number of advancements for gaming – online multiplayer gaming, new digital methods of game distribution, even the creation of MMO games where all players of a single game across the world can interact and socialize with each other — thanks to the fast internet and advance wifi routers.
