Gaming on YouTube is very popular, but how can you get started? Today, we have all the info you need to become the next big thing on YouTube:
A big part of making a name for yourself on YouTube is getting the equipment to allow you to do so. You might be the funniest, most entertaining gamer there is, but no one will know if you haven’t got the tools to showcase your talents. As such, you need to make a list of all the essential equipment needed to start your channel.
First thing’s first, you need a PC. Your PC will pretty much do everything for you. It’s what you’ll use to edit your videos on, what you’ll use to upload them on, and can even be what you use to play your games on. Consequently, you need a really good PC with specs that can handle a lot of applications all at one time, and has the power to process your videos properly. A lot of gaming YouTubers get custom-built PC’s so they can have something that they know will work to their demands. Then again, many big gaming YouTubers happily use Macbook Pro’s, as they’re seen as the best device for editing videos on. Which reminds me, as well as your PC you’ll need good editing software. There’s an abundance of options to choose from, many people swear by Final Cut Pro, others like Sony Vegas, it’s all about personal preference, to be honest.
To go alongside your PC, you should also buy plenty of external storage. Get a handful of external hard drives that you can store files on so they don’t take up all the space on your PC, and are protected if your PC crashes and deletes any files.
Of course, if you want to be a gaming sensation then you need something to game on. In days gone by, people would always use a console to game on and nothing else. But, a lot of people are having success with PC gaming as there is a huge catalog of indie games to try out that viewers find entertaining. The best solution is to get both. I know, this is expensive, but you don’t have to buy everything all at once. You could start off with a Playstation or Xbox, then buy a gaming PC when things start looking good for your channel. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to spend thousands of dollars on a good gaming PC. In fact, you can easily pick up a 500 dollar gaming PC that works well and does the job just fine. No matter what, ensure you have a device to game on, or you’re not going to get very far.
Naturally, you need something to capture your gameplay while you game. There are loads of game capture devices out there, but most people swear by Elgato. You can connect an Elgato game capture device to your console/gaming PC, and then record the footage and save it on your computer. This footage can then be edited using your chosen software, simple!
These days, it’s common to have a facecam in the corner of your videos. This is because people like seeing your reactions as you game. So, get yourself a camera that records footage in high definition, possibly even 4K if you’re feeling adventurous, and a microphone with good sound quality. Honestly, the microphone is more important here. There’s nothing worse than bad audio, so prioritize this over a good camera if you have to.
When you’ve got all of your equipment, you can start planning your videos and what your channel is going to be about. Of course, if you want to make it as a gaming sensation, then you know you’re going to create gaming videos, that part is simple.
However, there are loads of different gaming videos you can make, it’s all about finding ones that are popular and that you feel comfortable recording. Below, we’ve written a few ideas for gaming videos and what’s good/bad about them:
Back in the day, gaming commentary videos were everywhere. A lot of big gaming YouTubers made a name for themselves in this way. The format of a commentary video is simple, you play a game and comment on it. Usually, you should be good at the game and display great gameplay then talk over it with tips and tricks for your viewers. Alternatively, people would record gameplay and then just talk about a certain topic over it that might relate to the game. These days, this isn’t as popular as it once was but is a good idea if you want to build a very niche audience of loyal viewers. It won’t get you to millions of subscribers, but you can still do very well.
Easily the most popular gaming video on YouTube at the moment is funny moments. This is where you play a game and just have fun, trying whacky things that make you and your audience laugh. It’s even better when you have a gaming crew with you to join in with the funny moments. The key with this is to play a lot of random games, particularly indie titles. Many of the biggest YouTuber’s right now all film this type of video. People like the entertainment value, and it can grow your channel fast.
Finally, you could go down the more professional route and make gaming news videos. These are worthwhile as a lot of people are always looking for the latest gaming news. Again, you can build a decent audience, but you’re unlikely to ever really hit millions and millions of subscribers. But, that doesn’t mean you’re not successful!
Figure out which of these ideas suits you best and then go about building your audience. We’ll round this off with three things to remember if you want to be a success on YouTube:
Be consistent and upload as often as possible, preferably daily
Stay connected with your audience and make them feel involved and engaged
Be different to everyone else. It’s okay to be inspired by others, but put your own stamp on things!
Now, you have all the equipment, all the ideas, and are ready to try your hand at being the next gaming sensation on YouTube.
