Technology is getting more advanced, and TVs are at the forefront of the revolution. Nowadays, instead of a dumb, regular TV, there are smart ones. They connect to the internet, have a greater resolution, and make life around the house easier. Yep, a smart television is the bomb, isn’t it? Well, they do have their advantages, but they also have disadvantages, too. In fact, the cons can often outweigh the pros. That might seem like blasphemy, but it’s true. For all you non-believers out there here’s way new age smart TVs aren’t always the best choice.
We’re not conspiracy theorists here at Mighty Shouts, but we do know a bad deal when we see one. And, smart TVs look like a pretty bad deal to us. The reason is simple: the costs are extortionate. Back in the day, an average TV set would put you back a hundred dollars or so, but they are three or four times that today. A 4K monitor can cost anywhere in the range of $500-700. Unless you have money to burn, that’s a lot of cash to spend on a television. Unfortunately, new technology does make the experience better, but it is also an excuse to raise prices.
Most people think that the lower you go price wise, the lesser the quality. So, if you’re looking for a monitor for a specific reason, like gaming, you’ll want to go high. The truth is that there are plenty of cheap TVs on the market that still add value to the experience. Indeed, the best gaming monitor under 200 dollars has an excellent reputation. If you put it up against a screen that costs double that, not many people will be able to tell the difference. And, the same goes for pretty much any TV for any role. If you’re looking to watch Netflix or Skype with your friends, there is a cheap and high-quality option out there in the ether.
Let’s face it – Big Brother has arrived, and the government is taking over our TVs. Privacy has been flaunted so much in the past couple of years that they can even hack a microwave. What is the world coming to?! On a serious note, the lack of privacy should be a concern. Although you might not be on their list, it’s possible for any intelligence agency in the world to track you in your home. Okay, you can turn off the set to stop the breach, but who has a TV set to leave it in the corner unplugged? The solution is to find a smart TV without a camera.
There is no doubt that the idea behind the smart TV is fantastic. It’s spot on and ahead of its time. The issue is that the technology hasn’t quite caught up just yet. Today, the interfaces are basic, the apps crude and unreliable, and the experience not what it should be. In the future, smart TVs will be the best option on the market solely based on quality.
Until then, you’ll just have to grin and bear it.
