You know that whenever you call anyone or send any message, you’re facing a security risk by leaving your phone number with the recipient. This can be a very big security vulnerability. Today, we’re gonna discuss Burner Phone – What it is? How can it be beneficial in securing our lives and how you can use a free second phone number on your present smart phone. Let’s Start.
When I first hear the word ‘Burner’, I think of the Hollywood movie character where notorious people make some phone calls, throws out the battery, breaks the Sim card and throw the mobile unit in the Pond or in the dumps.
Generally, Burner is the short form for the Burner Phone. Burners are generally the devices which are used for very specific purposes (Majority of times Criminal activities) and then burned or disposed of when too many people have the number.
These type of phones are purchased with cash and they are very cheap. Burner Phones are extremely hard to track because Mobile Operators don’t have any cellular contract so no identification can be done. Even the NSA has hard time tracking these burners as they will probably ask the mobile operators but MVNOs themselves don’t know the details. When they try to inquire these Burners do not verify the details.
The major issue in tracking these burner phones is that MVNOs can’t locate the device as the burner phone is not registered with them. Even if they try to look for the device and finds it. The user can easily burn the first number and buy a new phone for just $20-25.
Earlier, the main motive behind Burner Phone was to protect the identity but criminals made the use of Burner phone for notorious purposes. People might say that they can just dial *67 before the number and their number would be anonymous but there are certain problems with this method. One of the biggest being people can’t call you back.
Moreover, your number is registered with the MVNO so if someone needs complete privacy they wouldn’t get it. You also can’t list your number on any website using the above method.
In a report, Department of Homeland Security tells that the searches conducted by the US Border agents grew from 5k in 2015 to 25k in 2016. From the stats, it is clear that we need to increase the privacy of our smartphones.
Now you know the way by which you can leave your smartphone at home and travel the World free hand – just buy a burner phone at a new place and throw away when leaving the country.
Let me tell you more general use of the second phone number, people in India use a second phone number to separate their work life and social life.
Suppose you need to sell your car on any car selling portal. Obviously, for that, you need to list your phone number on the website for interested buyers to contact you. There is a high risk of you getting spammed because there will be a variety of people on that car selling website. The best possible way would be to buy a Burner Phone just for selling your car or for that website. After selling your car, burn that number. People might have several businesses so they could buy one number for each business. This way they would be able to cater the needs of the people in a much more professional way.
There must be so many people who use Tinder app, you might be doing the biggest mistake by listing your real number on that. Your colleagues or your friends might track you by recognizing your original number. So, what to do? Yeah, you’re right – Burner Number. By using the Burner Phone you don’t have to worry about anything, go crazy over Tinder and when things go wrong – Burn that number 😉
Now everyone knows about Burners and they could easily do whatever they want with it. Let us now move on to the types of Burner Phones available.
There are two types of burner phones – one is the physical and other one is virtual. Let’s first look at the Physical Burner Phone where a phone is locked by any MVNO service and second is the unlocked set where you could put your own Sim card.
A lot of people might be thinking about the difference between the two, there is only one that is in the radio systems. Let me use more familiar terms – CDMA and GSM. For GSM (Global System for Mobile), you can think of T-Mobile, AT&T and for CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access), Verizon Wireless and Sprint.
GSM generally sell their sim cards while CDMA sells their Mobile phones. For us, this only means that for GSM we have to burn the Sim card while for CDMA burn the entire device.
The 2nd type is the Virtual Burner Phone. This is very cool and my personal favorite too because you just have to install an application on your regular smartphone and with the magic of their servers, these apps could behave like a completely different phone. Few examples of Virtual Burners are Hushed, Burner, Line2, TextMeUp, and Sideline.
There are several remarkable features that these apps offer the use of multiple virtual phones, the self-destruction of the messages and much more. As these apps are connected to our phone so they are not useful for hiding from the Government. During the times of bigger threats, prefer using the physical burner devices as they offer complete privacy.
Let’s now focus on the Virtual Burner and start using one of them – Burner.
Once you are done with the installation and opened the app. The app will prompt you to Sign Up. It will also ask for what purpose you need the app – it is just a survey so select whichever you like.
Now, let me tell you why I was asking you to use the physical burner for an anonymous task. This app will ask you the number and will send a text to verify it. You’ll be greeted with a pop-up explaining about the 911 emergency calls.
Always remember that for calling 911, you will need a carrier.
You can create your very own first burner number and it will give us a choice of the area code. People who don’t have the area code at the top of their head, they could use this AllAreaCode’s tool for looking up the area codes.
Note: All area codes will not be available in this app.
This app will offer a free service for the first 7 days along with 20 mins of call time and 40 text messages, after that you have to pay a nominal fee of $4.99/month to continue using the services for one line. In case someone needs more could go with the 3 line subscription which is for $14.99/month.
Subscribers will get
The burner can connect with numerous apps so let’s make an auto-reply bot by using Evernote. You can automate your tasks using this mechanism.
Now, you need to open up the app and make a new notebook labeled “Burner” in the app.
Each of the note we make in this app is a command for our bot. The title will be the command and the response to the command will be the body.
If someone would say the word Wi-Fi then in response the bot will return the following response:-
Network name: Null Byte
The next step would be to go to Burner app and there move on to the settings. Under the settings look for available connections – You will see Evernote there. Authorize the app by providing the credentials.
You must have signed in with your Evernote credentials in the Burner app. Now is the time to update the Auto-Responder settings in the Burner app. Once you update the Auto-Responder header in the settings. Your app will be able to read the notes within the Evernote. After changing the header don’t forget to press the floppy disk icon on the top right corner of the screen.
Here is your simple Bot ready. This can be used in the Hotel for providing the guest with the Wi-Fi and other relevant information. Just imagine the power of this engine that it could be escalated to be used as a Social Engineering Hacking tool with physically no connection pointing to you.
